You are becoming aware of your inner loving feelings in the vicinity of your heart - perhaps a warm feeling, or a glow, a colour, vibration, or sound. Above your head is an enormous vibrant light source, which if you wish, you may perceive as the light and love of God, or a universal energy, shining down strongly but gently intermingling with your own inner love. Meditation is simply being in a state of awareness. When your mind is focused on one thing, and is free of all other distractions, it can be considered meditation. I started by just sitting down quite for 2 to 3 minutes after my work-outs. It was very difficult at first but like anything in life if you want to get better at it - you need to practice.
I personally love lying down when I do the work. I find it more relaxing, and am able to let go of the thoughts more easily. However, I suggest avoiding the bed or the couch. A mat on the floor is better for the body, and allows for perfect chakra alignment. When affirming, or visualizing, or using other techniques, the bed or couch is fine. If sitting suits, find a chair that is both comfortable, and straight backed. When you meditate, you have to learn a certain, predetermined set of Buddhist meditation techniques.
These include physical positions, breathing techniques, Buddhist-based theories, and specific means of visualization and relaxation. These different techniques vary greatly in terms of difficulty, time requirements, desired and produced effects, etc. In addition, attendance at a Buddhist meditation retreat is in essence a form of insurance. You will be surrounded by a group of teachers and practitioners who share your commitment to the meditative process. These are dedicated, disciplined people who inspire you to stay the course. They will not allow you to stray from the precepts that are so very vital to the cause of successful meditation.
Every time you sit in Meditation, there is a process of creation, change and manifestation that takes place. Whether you are aware of this or not, it is happening. Basically and essentially, a good meditation guide takes the guess work out of meditation. You will know in full how, when, where and most importantly why you meditate. You will know what to expect along the path to spiritual enlightenment. And you will learn about the many benefits that come as part of the meditative experience, including truth, purity, peace and love; both for yourself and for others in your life.
Guided meditations where there is a voice giving instructions on how to mediate are most often recorded with a calming meditation music in the background. These can be a good way to enter into the meditative state for beginners as you don't really need to do anything but listen to the voice and the music, follow the instructions and allow yourself to become immersed in the world of fantasy that is being created.
Another pointer to remember to succeed in meditation is to block out any possible distractions which may include loud noises, uncomfortable clothing, extreme temperatures, and the like. The idea is to create a space and assume a position where you body and mind can relax and let go of the demanding thoughts and feelings that usually plague them.
